Almonds are one of the most widely consumed seed in the world. While it looks like a nut, it’s not considered a true but because it’s a drupe. Packed with nutrients like healthy fats, antioxidants and vitamins, having almonds daily has a lot of health benefits.
Native to the Middle East, the popular ‘nut’ is grown all around the world. The nut itself comes from a tree which is called Prunus Dulcis or commonly known as Almond tree.
Decreased risk of Cancer
Almonds are rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants are substances that help in fighting oxidative stress and help in reducing the risks of cancer. Oxidative stress cause damage to the molecules in the body and contribute to aging.
Researches have established that almond consumers have decreased risk of cancer. The high content of vitamin E also helps in this regard. High consumption of Vitamin E decreases chances of colon cancer and prostate cancer.
Decreased chances of Heart diseases
Heart diseases are among the highest causes of death around the world. A Centers of Diseases Control and Prevention report states that more than 600,000 deaths are caused by heart related issues annually, making up 25% of all annual deaths.
Heart diseases are majorly caused by increasing levels of cholesterol and Almonds help keep the levels of cholesterol in check. Cholesterol comes in two kinds, HDL or the good kind and LDL, the bad kind. Consumption of almonds not only reduces the quantity of LDL cholesterol in your body but also increase the quantity of HDL cholesterol, ultimately decreasing the chances of heart diseases.
Keeps Blood Sugar level under control
Diabetes has become a global issue. An un-killable disease with large implication. It is usually caused by irregular levels of sugar and the low carb content in Almonds coupled with its high content of fats, protein and fiber make it the perfect choice for diabetics.
Almonds also high magnesium content and magnesium is involved in controlling blood sugar levels. It is interesting to know that people with type 2 diabetes are also found to have very low levels of magnesium in their bodies and almonds not only correct this but also improve insulin function. They also decrease insulin resistance in people without diabetes.
Obesity or being overweight in general is becoming an increasingly common issue with the current generation. Almond’s low fat-high protein combination reduces the calorie intake of a person. This happens because consumption of proteins and fibers increases the feeling of fullness while keeping the consumption of overall calorie under control. So, despite having quite the content of fat, almonds decrease the calorie intake and are a weight-loss friendly food.
